        Banks Security

        📍 624 Goldwire Place S.W., Birmingham, AL 35211

        Current use: Vacant

        Read the history

        The General Services Inc. dba Banks Security Company was a Black-owned money protection service operating in Alabama during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The company expanded its operations after an extended court battle and a ruling by the Alabama Public Service Commission.

        Superior Cleaners

        Current use: Hair salon; property of Dr. Eddie Woods, Jr., DDS

        Read the history

        Superior Cleaners was a commercial structure built for a dry-cleaning business by Alexander Hamilton Love, a Black businessman who began as a presser, advanced to manager, and later became an owner. The original structure dates to 1947 and later housed Dr. Eddie Woods’ dental office and a photo studio.

        Green Liberty Baptist Church

        Read the history

        Green Liberty Baptist Church hosted a youth chapter of the NAACP until the mid-1950s and later served as a youth training site for the 1960s Children’s Crusade. The site was also connected to local legend Ma Yet’s daycare. Designed by Wallace Rayfield and built in the 1920s, it was one of Titusville’s oldest intact structures.

        New Pilgrim Baptist Church

        Current use: Empty lot; property of UAB Educational Foundation

        Read the history

        New Pilgrim Baptist Church was a major strategy center for the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The original church has been demolished and the site is now an empty lot.

        Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church / School Complex

        Our Lady of Fatima was the first Catholic church in Birmingham established to serve the African American community. The Immaculata school was also the first Catholic high school in the city created for Black students.

        Original Structures

        Bowman’s Groceteria / Bowman House

        📍 400 First Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205

        Current use: BOMAC Exterminating Company

        Read the history

        The property was associated with early businessman Joseph H. Bowman, Jr. and included the family home and neighborhood grocery. The original structures later became home to BOMAC Exterminating Company and NANA’s Grocery.

        Memorial Park

        Current use: City park, recreation center and swimming pool

        Read the history

        Colored Memorial Park was Birmingham’s first public park created for Black residents. Titusville citizens advocated for the park and helped raise money for its development. It also became the site of the “Miracle Sunday” Civil Rights-era incident.

        Read the history

        The D’Piano House is a circa 1914–1915 shotgun-style rental house connected to Black workers employed in Birmingham’s iron, steel and personal-service industries. The original structure remains.

        Lucinda B. Robey served as Director of the Youth Division of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and was a key leader connected to the 1960s Civil Rights Children’s Crusade.

        St. Paul Lutheran Church was pastored by Rev. Joseph Elwanger, a strategist with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a vocal white clergyman during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
